U.S. stocks end lower in choppy session after data shows inflation running hottest since 1981

US stocks closed slightly lower on Tuesday, giving up earlier gains, as investors questioned whether the sharp rise in the consumer price index in more than 40 years indicates a peak in inflation.

What happened

On Monday, the Dow Jones fell 413 points, or 1.2%, while the S&P 500 fell 1.7% and the Nasdaq Composite fell 2.2%. The S&P 500 ended the session down 7% over the year.
