Toyota launches bZ4X electric SUV with starting price of $42,000

Toyota officially launched the bZ4X, its first all-electric car in a long time, in the United States and announced a starting price of $42,000.

The Japanese automaker already revealed the bZ4X electric SUV last year, but the big missing piece was the price in the US.

Toyota announced today that the bZ4X is coming to US dealerships this week and that its MSRP starts at $42,000:

Coming to dealerships this spring with an EPA estimated range rating of 252 miles (for XLE front-wheel drive models, based on EPA testing procedure standards), the Toyota BZ4X 2023 will have a starting price of $42,000. According to For the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the estimated five-year average fuel cost savings for a 2023 bZ4X XLE FWD compared to an average new vehicle is $5,000.”

However, because Toyota uses a franchise dealer model, keep in mind that the buyer and dealer always agree on a final price.

As we recently reported, Toyota expects to hit the maximum federal tax credit of $7,500 for electric vehicles this summer. This will start a phase-out period which will gradually save less money for buyers.

Interestingly enough, the all-wheel-drive version is only about $2,000 more expensive than the front-wheel drive, but it’s significantly less efficient dropping about 24 miles of range with AWD:

The XLE FWD has an EPA-estimated range of 252 miles. The XLE AWD model has an EPA-estimated range of 228 miles. The EPA-estimated fuel economy rating for the XLE FWD is 131 mpg city, 107 mpg highway and 119 mpg combined. The EPA-estimated fuel economy rating for the XLE AWD is 114 mpg city, 94 mpg highway and 104 mpg combined. “

As for the “limited” version, it comes with a few luxury design touches and 20-inch wheels instead of the 18-inch wheels on the XLE version.

In terms of size, the bZ4X is on the larger side of the compact SUV segment. It is slightly larger than Toyota’s popular RAV4:

It’s 3.7 inches longer than the RAV4, at 184.6 inches, with a 6.3 inches longer wheelbase at 112.2 inches. It’s 2.0 inches lower than the RAV4 at 69.0 inches high, and 0.2 inches wider, at 73.2 inches. The bZ4X offers a comfortable legroom of 42.1 inches for the front seat and 35.3 inches for passengers in the rear. Load capacity is 27.7 cubic feet behind the second row.

The car is coming in the spring of 2022.

Take Electric

This is an excellent price point in my opinion and I believe Toyota will be able to sell as many electric SUVs as possible.

My main concern is that it won’t be much.

Toyota is lagging behind the competition in bringing all-electric vehicles to market and has a history of making just what you need to comply with regulations and avoid fines.

This is not a winning strategy today when you have car manufacturers like Tesla investing in the supply chain to support millions of BEV production annually.

I think Toyota is starting to understand that, but it will likely take the company years to ramp up production of electric cars to large volumes.
