The technology could be of particular benefit in a geographic area such as Mongolia – the first country to incorporate the service into the national postal service. However, English maintains a linguistic advantage, as it is the only language the company uses to deal with each of its 57 trillion square feet – including the oceans, which represent 71% of the Earth’s surface. The words “naughty” are omitted, as are homophones such as “heard” and “here” to avoid potential confusion when speaking to a voice-based assistant.

Although automakers tend to move slower than electronics companies, the number joining the service is growing rapidly, with seven automakers registering in the past six months, including Ford, Mitsubishi and Lamborghini. The company owns 10 car manufacturers in total and 11 so-called “Tier 1 suppliers” – companies that manufacture various parts for vehicles, including navigation provider TomTom.

Mercedes was the first, and now every new Mercedes is technology enabled.

“The boss of Daimler got that in before we even finished the first sentence,” Jones said, describing how Mercedes-Benz Group AG’s Ola Källenius grasped the significance when he first introduced the 3-word title.

“They are what we call aspiring innovators,” said Jones of Mercedes. “We focus on these people.”

Jones added, “Lamborghini said, ‘Everything about us is innovation, so we want the latest technology in our cars.’” Now Subaru sees the phrases as a fit to feature the Outback as an off-road vehicle.

The service is free for drivers, and is paid by automakers for a license fee for each vehicle.

But the technology is also finding other users, such as first responders who need to identify individuals in an emergency. Delivery is another use case. “A standard Google Maps GPS location doesn’t tell you which part of the building you want to go to; it just drops a pin in the middle of the structure,” Jones noted. Technology has also entered pop culture. It has been featured as a plot device on shows like “CSI”. Imagine Dragons used it as a kind of Easter egg. Title 3 Words is looking forward to further expansion. Revenue in 2020 reached half a million; Jones declined to provide an update on revenue. But more than £100m in venture money has so far been raised from investors including the venture unit of Mercedes, Intel, Aramex, Deutsche Bahn, Subaru and Sony’s Innovation Fund.

Jones said the company is now working on a Series D investment round, the proceeds of which will help spread the technology to more languages, among other tasks.

There is also a need to develop more marketing to familiarize people with the service. Right now word of mouth – no pun intended – may be the only way a lot of people approach a 3 word title. it, or use it in vehicle navigation.
