Russia has finally recovered the body of one of its seven generals killed in Ukraine nearly a month after he was assassinated, reports say.
The corpse of a general, believed to be Major General Oleg Mityaev, 47, commander of the army’s feared 150th Motorized Rifle Division, was recovered where it had lain for weeks after being killed in an ambush in Mariupol on March 16.
Russia usually refuses to confirm the deaths of its generals in combat, but Ukraine’s defense ministry has claimed seven dead, the first being Major General Magomed Tushayev, who was killed two days before the invasion of Hostomel on Feb. 26.
The most recent death is believed to be that of Lieutenant General Yakov Rezantsev, commander of Russia’s 49th Combined Army, who was killed on March 25 in an attack near the southern city of Kherson.
