About the role:

The University of Melbourne is looking for a Research Fellow to work at the intersection of machine learning, natural language processing, and privacy. The research will specifically address the development and evaluation of privacy-preservation algorithms for natural language processing methods, including comprehensive training and pipeline deployment of machine learning models for text generation. The work will benefit from many frameworks such as Unified Learning and Differential Privacy.

The research fellow will work in the Natural Language Processing group in the School of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Melbourne and will work under the supervision of Professor Trevor Kuhn and Associate Professor Olia Oremenko.

This position provides an opportunity for the budding researcher to build their research career in the context of research with strong practical value

Responsibilities include:

Independently plan and conduct research on the candidate research project and work to complete project objectives within effective timeframes and milestones.

  • Perform data analysis, be responsible for the qualitative and statistical analysis of research data and communicate this information to the chief investigators and collaborators;
  • Publish results in high-quality conferences and journals and conduct presentations to a wide audience, including key industry partners,
  • Identify sources of funding to support individual or collaborative projects, related to teaching, research and practice participating in the discipline;

around you:

You are a passionate researcher with experience in machine learning or computational linguistics. You are able to work independently, and easily manage your workload with excellent organizational and project management skills. You have highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. Your strong communication skills allow you to communicate technical concepts to a wide range of audiences.

You will also have:

  • A PhD in Computer Science or a related field, awarded or about to be completed
  • An emerging research track record and recognition of high-quality research output, evidenced by publications and the development of research initiatives
  • Strong programming skills and ability to implement practical systems
