Internet Slams Father After Taking Niece on Vacation and Not Daughter

The internet is rallying against a man who took his niece on vacation, not his daughter.

Posted on the popular AmITheA**hole forum on Reddit, using the account u/throwaway63618293, a man shared his story and allowed the “AITA” community to decide if it should be considered a hole in his situation. The post has more than 8000 votes and 2000 comments.

The Redditor has a 14-year-old daughter whom he calls “Wendy” who lives with his ex-wife away from his place of residence and has custody. He only sees his daughter once a month. He lives with his 15-year-old niece, Claire, whom he has raised since she was a child due to the death of her parents. He writes that he is closer to Claire than Wendy because Claire lives with him. He made it clear that Wendy and Claire did not get along.

It is not easy to lose a loved one – especially a parent. A person going through a grieving process may experience a variety of emotions including anger, guilt, shock, numbness, pain, or even confusion, according to Healthline. Healthline recommends staying close to other family members, treatment or support groups, and discussing memories with friends and family.

Father and daughter quarrel
The Internet criticized the Redditor who chose to take his niece on vacation instead of his daughter in a new viral post.

“A while ago I got a bonus at work and decided to go on a trip but couldn’t stand both girls and also the girls didn’t get along (which is Claire’s fault I admit mostly) so no one would have fun if I took them so I had to pick one, and since Wendy She can go with her mother if she wants, I’ve decided it’s only fair if I take Claire.”

When they returned from the trip, Wendy was furious with her father and claimed he didn’t take her on vacations and “chose his niece instead.”

“Claire grew up seeing her as my daughter, so I don’t think I did anything wrong. But my ex calls me AH and says I’ve always supported Claire but it’s not true,” he ended his message.

AITA followers were quick to comment,

u/Timely_Excuse2194 said “YTA. Why did you have to take the trip? Nobody is forcing you. You could have done the trip alone or used the money to do something fun with your girl. You let this relationship really fester”.

U/Unit-00 wrote in part, “YTA, your daughter feels like you replaced her, and you kind of did.”

u/Geeklover1030 said “YTA if you can’t stand both then don’t go at all. You’re obviously showing favouritism”.
