Intel aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040

Intel has laid out plans to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 as part of its efforts to tackle climate change.

“As one of the world’s leading semiconductor design and manufacturing companies, Intel is uniquely positioned to make a difference not only in our own operations, but in a way that makes it easier for customers, partners, and the entire value chain to make meaningful business decisions as well.”

To achieve its ultimate goal, Intel has set a series of interim milestones for 2030. These include achieving 100% renewable electricity use across its global operations; investing nearly $300 million in energy talks at its facilities to achieve a cumulative four billion kWh of energy savings; Build new plants and facilities to meet US Green Building Council LEED program standards; and launching a cross-industry research and development initiative to identify greener chemicals with lower global warming potentials and develop new mitigation equipment.

The company explained that by 2030 it also wants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the supply chain by at least 30%, reduce emissions related to client form factor reference platform designs by 30% or more, and increase the efficiency of customer and server microprocessor utilization by 10 times. .

In addition, Intel is looking for a fivefold increase in the power efficiency of discrete GPUs by 2025.

Intel has indicated that collaboration with customers and other industry partners will be another key aspect of achieving its 2040 goal, highlighting how it has partnered with companies like Submer to launch pilot liquid-immersion cooling deployments for data centers across cloud and telecom service providers.

“Collaboration is key if we are to find solutions to the critical environmental issues the world grapples with. Intel has been an important partner in this regard, helping us drive co-innovation that supports motherboard improvement, bio-based printed circuit board development and increased system energy efficiency in Our Concept Luna machine,” said Glen Robson, CEO of Dell Client Solutions Group.

At the same time, Intel said it is studying the layout, selection, and modulation of all internal components to reduce the size of motherboards, and will use biometric printed circuit boards to facilitate the separation of materials and components for recycling and to reduce overall electronic waste.

Intel joins a growing list of tech giants that have made similar sustainability pledges, including IBM, Amazon and Google.
