Google Using AI To Automatically Update Some Business Information

Google has announced that it will use artificial intelligence (AI) and a machine learning (ML) model to automatically update working hours and real-world route information.

The goal of these initiatives is to provide users with more up-to-date information about neighborhood changes.

Harness the power of artificial intelligence for more accurate information

Although research into artificial intelligence began in the 1950s, it did not begin to make profound educational breakthroughs until relatively recently. This is largely because machine learning has advanced significantly after 2010.

“From my experience, I’ve seen that machine learning algorithms are no longer obstacles. They are certainly far from perfect, and there is a lot of work to be done, but this work is happening at breakneck speed,” Ido Liberty, former head of the Amazon AI Lab And the current CEO of Pinecone, a database geared for similarity research, said in a Feb. 22 interview with Search Engine Magazine.

Parallel to the rise of big data, these advances are allowing AI to advance at an astonishing speed.

Google uses artificial intelligence to update working hours

COVID-19 has changed the way many businesses operate, including the opening hours of retailers and restaurants. To address these changes and improve search engine users, Google has developed a machine learning model that automatically determines if the working hours are likely wrong.

Once the incorrect business hours are identified, Google immediately updates the company’s business profile with predictions generated by artificial intelligence.

For example, a company might have a profile that shows it’s closed on a Monday, but it hasn’t been updated in over a year.

If Google determines that the busiest hours are usually Monday evenings, it will recognize the hours that are likely out of date and update them automatically.

It also uses Street View images of the storefront to mark hours of operations, while enlisting the help of local guides and business owners to verify forecasts.

Business owners are contacted using Google Duplex, an artificial intelligence system that allows people to have natural conversations and accomplish real-world tasks using computers over the phone.

Google expects this technology to help it update the working hours of more than 20 million companies worldwide over the next six months.

ML updates real world road conditions

Google also announced that it is testing other ways it can use images for AI and ML. Starting in the US, a third-party photo beta program is being launched which will provide the latest speed limit information.

The goal of this technology is to improve driver safety and add details that can make driving more efficient. Google hopes to eventually add information about pits, school districts, and construction.

The focus on privacy remains high

This trial version is designed with privacy as a key element. Only reference images will come from public roads. Partners will also be required to obfuscate identifying information, including faces and license plates.

Once Google receives an image, it blurs the image again, which is then deleted after updating the maps.
