Edge computing moves toward full autonomy

Edge computing is quickly shedding its reputation as a fringe concept, and both adopters and vendors are fixing their sights on the technology’s next goal: fully independent deployment and operation.

The cutting-edge publishing experience is as close to the simplicity of opening a new mobile phone box, says Theresa Tong, first cloud technology chief at IT and consulting firm Accenture. “We’re seeing automated technology simplifying the unique edge complexity of application, networking, and security deployments.”

The ability to create and manage containerized applications enables seamless development and deployment in the cloud, with the edge simply turning into a niche site with tighter resource constraints, says Tong. “Self-regulating and self-healing wireless network communication protocols, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, ISA100.11a, or WirelessHART, can create networks where dedicated devices can be deployed and self-configured.”

Matteo Gallina, Principal Consultant at ISG, a global technology research and consultancy firm, says that decentralizing IT environments to include sophisticated systems comes with specific challenges. “Management of devices and services must take place outside the scope of traditional management, including managing physically inaccessible devices, a wide variety of solutions and operating systems, different security requirements, and more,” he says. “The more and more systems are dispersed, the more important the role automation plays in ensuring effectiveness and reliability.”

Automation technology innovation led by open source communities

Tong says the trend toward automating cutting-edge deployments is not unlike the journey to AI, where innovations are driven by open source groups, infrastructure manufacturers and cloud service providers. She points out that open source communities such as LF Edge are driving innovations and building definitions of critical standards in areas such as communications, security, and resource management.

“Infrastructure providers are creating solutions that allow computing to be run anywhere and embedded in anything,” says Tong. “It includes new capabilities for devices that are ultra-low-power, ultra-fast, connected anywhere, ultra-secure and private.” “5G opens new opportunities for network equipment providers and telecom operators to innovate with both private and public networks with cutting edge computing capabilities,” she adds.
