GamesBeat 2022 returns with its biggest event for leaders in gaming on April 26-28. Reserve your place here!

The past few years have been…something. Since the Covid shutdown in early 2020, much of the world has changed the way it works. Supply chain restrictions and crippling inflation, as well as the pandemic, have kept people at home. Once you’ve done all your personal projects and watched all of Netflix, what’s left?

People are social creatures and they crave to interact with other humans. So, when you can’t spend time with your family and friends, you do the next best thing – use your phone to play games and stay in touch. This new report from data.ai shows us how the average person spends their phone time.

Use the app for hours a day

When I was a kid, they told us video games would rot our brains. Maybe they are right. But, what will our parents do in measuring the average daily hours they spend on apps? Maybe it’s a dismissive silence.

Time spent using phones on apps has, for most markets, been steadily rising for years. Indonesia took the top spot in the first quarter of 2022, heading towards the 6-hour-per-day mark, with Brazil just behind. South Korea and Mexico also reached the 5 hour mark, making the top 4 markets all using at least 5 hours a day.

All of the top 12 markets spend more than 4 hours a day on their phones and have shown growth. China is the only remote country with a 10% reduction in time used.

Now that we’ve looked at how much time people spend on apps, let’s take a look at what they do with their time.

Year after year, the top 4 apps remain the same. We always see Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and WhatsApp Messenger as the most popular apps all over the world. The only change we’ve made to this particular chart is to include Snapchat at #5.

Among the things listed in the competitive video streaming space is HBO Max, which ranked fifth in the United States. Revealed by rivals such as Disney+ and Netflix, HBO Max has 46.8 million subscribers (including cable and streaming).

Game Downloads

Well, here we are. Finally we move on to the nitty-gritty. Let’s look at the best games of the first quarter of 2022.

In the global market, we haven’t seen much change. Free Fire, Subway Surfers, Roblox, and Candy Crush Saga are not entirely new to the world. An interesting inclusion, which you can also see topping the chart for Breakout games, is Merge & Fight.

In regional markets, Wordle by Goldfinch Studios has had an impressive few months. Among the popularity of Wordle, the word game bought by the New York Times, Wordle from Goldfinch has received a massive influx of searches and subsequent downloads.

Breakout apps and games

Released in January of 2022, Merge & Fight, published by Homa games, was a huge hit. In this game, you combine dinosaurs to make tougher dinosaurs to face enemy monsters, dragons and other dinosaurs.

Another interesting inclusion was also launched in January. Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel was the #1 most downloaded game in Japan. The game, which is based on the popular Yu-Gi-Oh card game, also topped the hack game download chart in Japan.

The child apps planner is full of apps that help people in their daily life or just keep in touch. One interesting app, Locket Widget, appeared in the top 5 downloads for the first quarter of the year in the UK, US, France and Singapore. The application allows you to view photos from friends as the lock screen on your phone. If you can’t spend a lot of time with your friends, you can at least see what they’re up to!

Otherwise, the Breakout apps planner is mostly utilities and helpers. Among them are a number of private browsers, work from home utilities, and tax applications.
