CNN Plus is said to be struggling to gain viewers just two weeks after its launch, according to a report by CNBC. People familiar with the matter told the platform that the platform only attracts less than 10,000 viewers per day.
As CNBC notes, this is a significant dip in daily viewership for CNN’s cable network, which saw an average of 773,000 daily viewers last year. But CNN Plus is clearly still new – the CNN TV channel has been around for many years, plus it’s (usually) free to anyone with cable or satellite service.
recent report from from the inside It doesn’t make those numbers look better, though. Using the data collected by SensorTower, from the inside It discovered that the CNN app, which users must download to use CNN Plus, only had 18,000 new installs on the day the streaming service was launched. Six days later, CNN app installs grew by 70,000, but like from the inside Notes, it’s hard to know how many of these downloads are for CNN alone or CNN Plus. The service just arrived on Roku on Monday, but that might not be enough to boost viewership by a large margin.
“We remain pleased with the launch and the progress made only two weeks later,” a CNN spokesperson said in a statement to CNBC. CNN did not immediately respond the edgeComment request.
Low viewership rates coupled with a lack of entertainment (unless you’re interested in news and on-demand documentaries) lead to some serious vibes at Quibi – the short-lived service that lasted less than six months. Quibi notably lost 90 percent of its subscribers after its three-month free trial ended and reported 5.6 million downloads three months after its launch. CNN Plus hasn’t revealed how many subscribers it has, but those early numbers aren’t the most promising. For reference, Disney Plus achieved nearly 130 million subscribers by the end of 2021 and managed to cross 86 million subscribers after less than a year of existence.
CNN Plus launches on March 29th and costs $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year. It has a news-heavy lineup that features shows from Anderson Cooper, Audie Cornish, and former Fox News anchor Chris Wallace. It also offers interactive question-and-answer sessions in an effort to make the service more than Just being about live news.
CNN’s parent company WarnerMedia completed a major merger with Discovery earlier this month, a move that will eventually combine HBO Max and Discovery Plus into one app. Shortly before CNN Plus launched, CNN President Jeff Zucker resigned, and just last week, WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar left the company.
